TB is very much alive at Olive View-UCLA hospital in Sylmar

Matthew Kennedy spent his 39th birthday at the hospital learning to walk again.

Three months ago, the Venice Beach resident started having trouble moving his legs. When a chest X-ray at a Santa Monica health center revealed a shadow in his lungs, he was quickly transferred to a highly specialized tuberculosis ward 25 miles across the county at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar.

Doctors think the bacterial disease attacked his nerves ? unusual for TB, which typically infects the lungs. But rare is normal for the Olive View unit, one of only four such centers in the nation specialized in tuberculosis. "Something that the average physician would only see maybe once in a lifetime, we see kind of routinely here," said Dr. Glenn Mathisen, director of the infectious diseases department at Olive View.

The high-tech isolation unit opened last August as part of a $53-million federally funded renovation of the public hospital's emergency room to equip it for a bioterrorism attack. For now, it serves highly infectious or difficult-to-treat tuberculosis patients, reflecting positive and negative crosscurrents in TB medicine: Infections are down dramatically but getting more complicated.

"You're getting to those that are much more challenging to treat medically, that require longer hospitalization," said Dr. Frank Alvarez, who directs the county's tuberculosis control program.

For Olive View, which opened 90 years ago as the largest TB sanitarium west of the Mississippi, the new ward represents a bit of deja vu with a cutting edge. "We've come sort of full circle," Mathisen said.

The facility, which can handle up to 30 patients, has a state-of-the-art, pressure-controlled air circulation system designed to keep the airborne disease from spreading. An alarm system sounds if anything is amiss, and air leaving the ward gets zapped with UV light to kill any tuberculosis germs.

Once known as consumption, the killer disease that claimed Emily Bront? and Frederic Chopin, tuberculosis is now viewed as a bygone threat by many in developed countries.

But the illness remains widespread in poorer countries and still surfaces in the United States in places like Los Angeles, with large and diverse immigrant communities. "It's still a fatal disease," said Alvarez. "It needs to be taken still very seriously in terms of public health and safety."

TB cases in Los Angeles County have dropped nearly 70% over the last two decades. Still, 680 infections were confirmed last year and nearly 80% of those involved people born in other countries, primarily Mexico, the Philippines, Vietnam and China.

Olive View's ward is designed to accommodate the most demanding cases, thereby freeing up beds in infectious disease wards at other county hospitals. Mathisen said the severity of the 68 tuberculosis cases that have come through the unit in the last year caught the staff by surprise. "They're sicker than we thought they would be," he said.

Many of the center's patients are homeless or low income and have a host of other conditions that complicate tuberculosis treatment, including diabetes, HIV, heart disease, substance abuse or mental illness.

By keeping the patients for a few months, "we have time to counsel and educate them on their different illnesses" and medications, said Leona Mason, a nurse practitioner in the ward. "It's a lot for some of these people to take on."

People with weak immune systems are particularly at risk for tuberculosis, including children, the elderly and people with HIV. In Los Angeles, about 6% of tuberculosis cases occur among people with HIV, and nearly a quarter occur in people with diabetes.

Homeless patients or those with young children are required ? by court order if necessary ? to remain at Olive View until they are is no longer contagious. If a patient's tuberculosis is resistant to first-line drugs, he or she may stay at Olive View to receive harsher medications that are more toxic and require closer monitoring.

Kennedy, who was adopted from Korea, contracted his infection as a child, but it remained dormant for decades. The disease emerged suddenly, taking him by surprise. Indeed, although about a third of the world's population carries dormant tuberculosis, according to the World Health Organization, only about 10% of those infected will develop the disease.

In his hospital gown, tan socks and a paper face mask, Kennedy pushed a walker last week as he shuffled a lap around the hallways with the help of a physical therapist. He has improved significantly since arriving at Olive View three months ago, almost completely bedridden.

"I didn't think it would do this to me," Kennedy said, settling back into a wheelchair after his physical therapy session. Relearning to walk ? something he always took for granted ? has been his biggest challenge.

Recovering from tuberculosis can be a lengthy process. An infection that occurs only in the lungs takes a minimum of six months to fully treat. But infections in other organs ? such as the brain or the bowels ? other compounding illnesses or drug-resistance can require patients to take daily medication for as long as two years. Such factors can also drive up the cost of treatment from $25,000 to $250,000, Alvarez said.

Kennedy's leg condition could require several more months to fully recover. In the meantime, he looks forward to seeing his friends who visit on the weekends.

It's a hard way to spend a summer. "You look outside and it's nice and sunny out, and I'm stuck in here," he said.

Gambling Is Undergoing a Sea-Change | Desert Star Weekly

Reception at Cromwell Mint Casino UK

GAMING IN GREAT BRITAIN

Unlike Las Vegas or Monte Carlo, when you mention London your thoughts do not automatically turn to gambling, or ?gaming? as it?s euphemistically called. But the Brits have a long ? and for the casinos, bookies and betting shops ? profitable association with wagering. In fact, you would be hard-pressed to find a pub in England that did not have a slot machine or three (better known as a ?fruit machine?) along one or more of its walls.

The UK gaming industry is closely supervised by the Gaming Board of Great Britain, which enforces fair odds and properly supervised playing conditions on a country-wide basis. But a schism has been developing between online gambling and the old-fashioned brick-and-mortar kind which has liberalized gambling in general in the UK.

For example, London has long been a Mecca for casino gambling, attracting wealthy tourists and the repatriation of some petro-dollars from Middle Eastern princes. These casinos, some of which are quite lavish by any standard, were considered as ?private? clubs and there was a short waiting period of a day or two between putting in an application for membership and its virtually automatic approval. The wait was not a big burden, unless you were a tourist about to re-board the bus. However, this generally, posed no problem as the casinos eschewed day-trippers, and the waiting period could be circumvented by having a member sign you in as his or her guest.

Under a fairly recent change in UK gambling laws, the membership application requirement on casinos has been lifted and visitors are simply asked to register their name, date of birth and have a digital photo taken. But beware, if you win a ?large? sum of money you may be asked for identification before the cashier exchanges your chips for cash. It?s no coincidence that there is no official ID requirement to hand over one?s cash.

Another stop for someone wishing to observe the wagering culture of the UK is any main street betting shop. There are more than 9,000 betting shops scattered around the country where, in addition to the traditional wager on the horses or dogs, you can get odds for a variety of future events, even the outcome of the American presidential election.

The British gambling culture has been undergoing a sea-change recently with the proliferation of online gaming. Illegal for play in the U.S., Britain permits online, third-party licensed gaming, attracting major corporations such as Virgin and Sky. For example, establish an account with Virgin Games and customers can register, manage their account, play for bonuses, deposit and withdraw money on any Virgin Games website using any form of online connectivity.

SkyVegas gets your attention, and your money, by promising cash back even if you loose. And, if any further proof was needed as to the attractiveness of online gaming, Jackpotjoy claims to be the UK?s leading online instant win and bingo side with over four million players and a monthly pay-out of more than $300 million.

Now that the Olympic fever subsided, prices have come down to an earthly level and you have paid your respects to the Queen, fill some of your spare time remaining in the UK by visiting a casino and wagering a pound or two ? loosing pounds in the gym should be as easy.

The minimum age to gamble in the UK is 18, and casinos are generally open from 2 p.m. until 6 a.m., every day except Christmas.

However, before sitting down to play your game of choice, check out the rules with the casino staff as there are some minor differences between the American and British versions of the same game. But don?t worry, these changes are usually more favorable than Las Vegas rules.

CAESER?S PALACE

Fountains at Caesar?s Palace Las Vegas

No place pays homage to excess better than Las Vegas and Caesar?s Palace is out to prove it.

Before closing in 2000, the Bacchanal at Caesar?s Palace served as the hotel?s fine dining restaurant. Now, after 12 years and a $17 million renovation, the all-new Bacchanal Buffet will open early next month.

What?s the ?big deal? about another Las Vegas buffet? Everything!

The Bacchanal Buffet will serve an over-the-top edible orgy of more than 500 different items from classic favorites around the globe. The 25,000 square-foot, specially designed buffet venue will have seating for 600 diners who will choose from freshly prepared and made-to-order dishes from nine show kitchens: Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, American, Seafood, Pizza, Deli and, of course Dessert.

It comes as no surprise to say that the Bacchanal Buffet will raise the bar for buffets everywhere; after all, with the weight gained at the Bacchanal, who would be able to clear the table, much less the bar?

With about 30 days to go before the opening I?m beginning my diet now to make room for one more baked to order pistachio souffl?.

Sophie's Cuban Cuisine Franchise is Coming to the DC Metro Area

NEW YORK - August 17,2012 - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Sophie?s Cuban Cuisine (SCCF, LLC) announced today that they have signed a four restaurant development license for their iconic Cuban lunch restaurants in the Washington, DC Metro area. James Lambert, the Chief Operating Officer of the Running Cedar Restaurant Group, is part of a family with deep roots in the hospitality industry. He has had a stellar career in public service with the Federal Government but saw a void in the DC restaurant scene for a Cuban restaurant concept to fill and his instincts took over from there. Mr. Lambert said: ?The Washington DC area embraces a wide range of cultures and cuisines and we believe that Sophie?s Cuban Cuisine will provide its consumers with a unique and exciting new dining option that places high quality food at the center of its offering.? He continued: ?I believe a business has an obligation to not only provide a quality product to its customers, but to also act as a responsible employer and as a constructive, engaged member of its community. I?m very motivated to bring this new restaurant business the city that I love and call home.?

Sofia Luna, co-founder and President of Sophie?s, said: ?The background and accomplishments of the Lambert family and their passion for Sophie?s convinced our family to make our first foray outside of New York City to the Metro DC area. We are confident that the hungry lunchtime crowds in and around the business districts in DC, MD, and VA will be delighted by James Lambert?s new Sophie?s restaurants.?

?The first Sophie?s Cuban Cuisine restaurant will open at: 1134 19th Street NW in Washington, DC 20036 in the early part of 2013. This is a strategically located site near the heart of the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District with easy access for thousands of workers. It also has the potential for strong evening sales as well as our signature free delivery and catering to a wide area of the District. We look forward to a long and mutually rewarding relationship with the Lambert family and with our new customers in DC.?

Sophie?s Cuban Cuisine restaurants have been delighting hungry lunchtime crowds since 1997 when the Luna family opened their first restaurant in Lower Manhattan near the World Trade Center.

Sophie?s features a unique combination of elements: tasty ?comfort food? with a Cuban neighborhood feel; freshly made, healthy, hearty foods; a fast cafeteria-style line where guests see what they will be eating; and superior, speedy customer service where everyone is treated like a friend or neighbor. Take-out, catering, and delivery orders represent a large portion of overall sales.

The restaurants offer freshly made, savory, authentic Cuban specialties such as: Ropa Vieja (Shredded Beef Stew), Camar?n al Ajillo (Shrimps In Garlic Sauce), Maduros (Fried Sweet Plantains), Papa Rellena (Mashed Potatoes Stuffed With Ground Beef Stew), Ox Tail Stew, plenty of Arroz con Frijoles (Rice and Beans), and of course, the traditional Cuban Sandwich and many more.

Luna estimates that initial development costs for a Sophie?s in New York City range from $425,000 to $ 850,000 (including the Initial Franchise Fee and excluding real property) depending on factors such as the size and shape of the space and whether it had previous restaurant use. As the economy starts to improve we will consider franchises and Multi-Unit Development Agreements for other major cities on the East Coast.

Does he still have it?

Ex-Border Patrol union boss indicted

By the CNN Wire Staff

updated 7:04 AM EDT, Fri August 17, 2012

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Bonner is accused of taking payments for union activities and using it for himself
  • This "is a particularly troubling form of corruption," attorney says
  • Bonner is scheduled to be in court on August 20

(CNN) -- A retired union president was indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday and is accused of using his position to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The charges against Terence J. Bonner, former president of the National Border Patrol Union, include wire fraud, said United States Attorney Laura E. Duffy.

Bonner, who is from California, is accused of taking payments for union activities and using it for himself in a scheme to "defraud some 14,000 dues-paying union members," Duffy said.

"These false claims included periods of time when Bonner was actually visiting his mistress in Chicago or family members, as well as trips to attend non-Union activities, such as hockey games and other sporting events," the indictment says.

Bonner is also accused of filing for reimbursement for travel expenses for personal trips, Duffy said.

"Siphoning hundreds of thousands of dollars from hard-working fellow Border Patrol agents, many of whom put their lives on the line every day to protect this country, is a particularly troubling form of corruption that must be addressed," Duffy said.

Bonner was arrested and scheduled to be in court for his first appearance on Monday, August 20.

The Sacred Page: Biblical Faith and Fathering

Quotes from John W. Miller, Biblical Faith and Fathering: Why we call God ?Father,? (Paulist, 1989):

?Too little attention has been paid in recent critiques of biblical patriarchy to the fact that the father-involved family is a fragile cultural achievement that cannot be taken for granted. When this and other still neglected matters are taken in to consideration, the precise nature of the contribution of biblical faith to a high culture of fathering can better be appreciated.? (page 5)

Miller argues that the model of God as loving father in the Old and New Testaments helped create a cultural ideal of fatherhood in Christianity and Judaism that was profoundly beneficial to mothers and children when lived out.?

?Due to the marginality of males in the reproductive process, fathering is a cultural acquisition to an extent that mothering is not. Hence, when a culture ceases to support a father?s involvement with his own children (through its laws, mores, symbols, models, rituals) powerful natural forces take over in favor of the mother-alone family.? (page 13)

This is the general trend in America, where out-of-wedlock births and female-headed households steadily increase year after year. If trends continue, the intact, father-lead nuclear family will be an anomaly within twenty-five years.

Check 'N Chew Foursquare-enabled gumball machine hands-on (video)

When Tyler DeAngelo asked if we'd be interested in checking out his new project, we jumped at the opportunity. After all, we were pretty blown away with Fifth Avenue Frogger, his hacked arcade cabinet that incorporated real-time webcam footage of a busy Manhattan street into gameplay. His latest project, Check 'N Chew certainly has more apparent commercial applications, offering up a form of immediate gratification for social media users. The concept is fairly simple: check into Foursquare, get a gumball.

DeAngelo has hacked an off-the-shelf gumball machine with a stepper motor, Arduino and an XBee radio. There's also a port on the rear of the machine that plugs into a wall to power it all. The Check 'N Chew communicates wirelessly with an ethernet-to-wireless gateway device. When someone checks into an authorized location, information is sent from DeAngelo's server to the gateway, and a gumball is dispensed. The whole process is quite speedy, only taking a couple of seconds from Foursquare check-in to gumball dispensing.

17th century shipwreck to be freeze-dried, rebuilt

BRYAN, Texas (AP) ? More than three centuries ago, a French explorer's ship sank in the Gulf of Mexico, taking with it France's hopes of colonizing a vast piece of the New World ? modern-day Texas.

Like La Salle in 1685, researchers at Texas A&M University are in uncharted waters as they try to reconstruct his vessel with a gigantic freeze-dryer, the first undertaking of its size.

By placing the ship ? La Belle ? in a constant environment of up to 60 degrees below zero, more than 300 years of moisture will be safely removed from hundreds of European oak and pine timbers and planks. The freeze-dryer, located at the old Bryan Air Force base several miles northwest of College Station, is 40 feet long and 8 feet wide ? the biggest such machine on the continent devoted to archaeology.

Researchers will then rebuild the 54 ?-foot vessel, which will become the centerpiece of the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin.

From a historical perspective, it's "an icon of a small event that dramatically changed the course of Texas history," said Jim Bruseth, who led the Texas Historical Commission effort to recover the remains.

The supply ship was built in 1684 and sank two years later in a storm on Matagorda Bay, about midway between Galveston and Corpus Christi.

"When La Belle sank, that doomed La Salle's colony and opened up the door for Spain to come in and occupy Texas," Bruseth said. "People can see firsthand how history can turn on a dime."

"It's an important piece in ship architecture," said Peter Fix, conservator at the school's Center for Maritime Archaeology and Conservation. Researchers have determined that unlike earlier vessels, the frames on La Belle were marked specifically by the French craftsmen so the wood comprising the hull could follow the complex curve of the ship.

"This was the age of Enlightenment when math was coming into more play," Fix said.

After a more than decade-long hunt, Texas Historical Commission archaeologists found it in 1995 in 12 feet of murky water. Then began the tedious recovery that involved constructing a dam around the site.

After the water was pumped out, teams dug through up to 6 feet of mud in the Gulf of Mexico seabed to retrieve the nearly intact ship and some 700,000 items, from swords, cannons and ammunition to beads and mirrors intended for trade. Archaeologists also found one skeleton, believed to be a crew member or settler among the some 40 people aboard.

The ship was then transferred to the Texas A&M lab, where the water-logged wood has been immersed in a chemical solution to keep it solid.

Initially, the ship was being reassembled in a two-stage chemical process, but as oil prices rose, so did the cost of the key chemical, polyethylene glycol. They decided the freeze-dry process was more economical and would shorten the preservation timeframe. So, the hull was disassembled and the wood was categorized and digitally scanned so that they could make molds of its original shape.

A New York-based firm that specializes in scientific equipment built the submarine-like freeze dryer.

"If we were to take any piece of wood, say it's been in the water for 300 years, and pull it out, it would shrink, crack, warp within a couple of days," Fix said. "The physical stress on wood would essentially cause it to fall apart and crumble and powder into pieces."

But scientists know that at the right temperature and pressure, water can go from being solid to gas and skip the liquid phase.

"It's a slow, controlled process and depending on the thickness of material, over four to six or seven months, we know that timber has lost most of its bound water and it's safe to bring out," Fix said, noting that they're experimenting with smaller pieces to "make sure nothing goes wrong."

A similar preservation using freeze-dryer technology is planned for a medieval ship discovered in 2002 in Newport, South Wales. That vessel is about twice the length of La Belle.

The La Belle rebuilding will start late next year at the Bullock Museum.

"I can't wait," said Bruseth, who is serving as guest curator for the exhibit. "It's just fantastic to see this project reach the point where we'll actually be reassembling the ship as a permanent installation."

Rene-Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle was the first European to travel the Mississippi River south to the Gulf, claiming all the land along the Mississippi and its tributaries for France in 1682. In 1685, he sailed from France with more than 300 colonists aboard four ships, La Belle among them, to establish a settlement at the mouth of the Mississippi.

Maps of the time show he believed the river was closer to Mexico, and his expedition missed the Mississippi by hundreds of miles.

"They were guessing," Bruseth said.

His team established a colony near Matagorda Bay, but it was ravaged by disease, rattlesnakes and Indians. Three years later, La Salle led a handful of survivors inland in search of the Mississippi. The explorer didn't make it out of Texas; he was murdered by his own men.

A model designed to balance the bolting load of wind turbines developed

ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) ? Mikel Abasolo, a researcher of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), has built a simplified simulation model for wind turbines. All one has to do is enter the characteristics that the tower and its parts will have, and in a matter of seconds the model predicts the load that has to be given to each of the bolts, which leads to great advantages in the construction and maintenance process. And it is a fact that in installations of such large dimensions, it is customary to have to adjust the bolts over and over again to balance the load.

But this model enables these data to be known before the building begins. Abasolo has done this work in the ADM (Mechanical Analysis and Design) group of the Faculty of Engineering in Bilbao, in the line corresponding to renewable energies. He has subsequently defended his thesis entitled Metamodelo para la simulaci?n y optimizaci?n de secuencias de atornillado en uniones de torres de aerogenerador (Meta-model for the simulation and optimisation of bolting sequences in wind turbine tower joints).

Owing to their great height, wind turbine towers are built in two or three parts and are subsequently bolted together. However, joining elements of such dimensions and quantities of bolts is very complex. "The aim is that all the bolts should have the same load so that they all work equally. But in practice, achieving this uniformity is no easy task. In an adjustment sequence, when you tighten one bolt, the previous ones lose part of their load," explains Abasolo. So, if in one sequence a load of 100 points (for example) is assigned to all the bolts one by one, by the end of the sequence most of them will not remain the same because when one is adjusted, the previous ones lose load. According to the researcher, only a few bolts will continue to have 100 points while the rest will be below that: "So, what do you do in order to keep all the bolts at the level of 100 points? You adjust them as many times as necessary (normally between three and four times), until you get a uniform load of 100 points on all of them. Naturally, this means a loss of time and money."

An exact load for each bolt

This is the reason why this simplified model is so valuable, because it can predict what load has to be apportioned to each bolt at the moment when the installation is assembled, so that by the end of the process the load ends up being uniform. You have to input into the model data like tube geometry, the exterior and interior diameter, the metrics and resistance of the bolts or the final load you want to achieve; this is enough so that in a matter of seconds the result that fits the circumstances is achieved. "The load that has to be assigned to each bolt will be greater than what one wants to obtain at the end, because it is lost in the sequence. If one wants to achieve a final load of 100, some will have to be assigned 110 and others 120, etc. The model tells us the exact load that has to be given to each bolt. This way the final load will be achieved in one single step, or, in two, at the most," asserts Abasolo.

This model can also be applied to maintenance tasks. As time goes by, the bolts of the wind turbine towers loosen, and just as when they are built, they have to be adjusted over and over again until the load is uniform once again, which means that here, too, a lot of time and money is lost.

As Abasolo explains, this simplified model is totally pioneering, since until now nothing like it geared towards wind turbines has been done: "Similar things have been done for pressure pipes, but there was nothing with respect to wind turbine joints. So we have taken advantage of a methodology never used before in this area." The model has yielded good results in a number of simulations that have been carried out over commercial programs, and has therefore been found to be useful. This researcher believes that in the future it could have applications as far as the market is concerned.

Stocks rise on more signs of economic growth

(AP) ? Stocks are edging higher on Wall Street following more signs that the U.S. economic recovery is advancing, albeit at a slow pace.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 15 points to 13,188 a half-hour after the opening bell Wednesday. The broader S&P 500 index rose two points to 1,406, while Nasdaq rose nine points to 3,025.

U.S. industrial production increased last month as factories made more cars, computers and airplanes, according to the Federal Reserve.

It was a sign that manufacturing is recovering after a weak spring. Also, consumer prices were unchanged in July from June, as a small drop in energy costs offset slightly higher food prices. The consumer price index hasn't changed since March, which means that inflation is in check.

Lower inflation gives the Federal Reserve more leeway to launch new programs intended to rekindle the economy. The Fed signaled at a meeting in late July that it is ready to act if growth and hiring stays weak.

Recent signs point to some economic improvement in July. Employers added the most jobs in five months, while consumers increased their retail spending after three months of declines.

Though they were better, the economic data showed a very weak recovery and that the U.S. economy is just trudging along.

It's left many investors wondering if the economy is fragile enough to create a sense of urgency among fiscal policy makers to act proactively. This slightly better outlook for the economy could prompt the Fed to hold off on taking action when its policy committee next meets in September.

In the last few weeks of the summer, trading volumes in the stock market have been low. Investors may also be holding off on taking aggressive positions ahead of a meeting of the U.S. Federal Reserve in Wyoming at the end of this month.

U.S. earnings were mixed.

Target rose 92 cents to $64.30 after the retailer increased its profit outlook for the year. Target is preparing its first expansion out of the U.S., into Canada.

Deere plummeted $5.11 to $75.02 after the agriculture machinery maker reported results that were well below Wall Street's expectations. The company attributed its poor results to a slowing global economy and the effects of a prolonged U.S. drought. Deere also cut its revenue forecast for the year.

Staples dropped $2 to $11.46 after the office and school supplies store said its income dropped 32 percent following weak sales in North America and Europe. The results fell short of analysts' expectations and the company cut its full-year earnings forecast.

Abercrombie & Fitch struggled to sell its preppy jeans and T-shirts in the previous quarter, but its results weren't as bad as analysts had forecast. The teen fashion leader also laid out plans for updating its fashions. The stock soared 10 percent, or $3.15, to $35.48.

Researchers create super-efficient microbial fuel cell, dream of selling excess electricity

EDIT Researchers create superefficient microbial fuel cell, dream of selling excess electricity

Recycling wastewater to generate energy has turned up noses before, but researchers at Oregon State University have developed a microbial fuel cell that can create 10 to 50, or even 100 times more electricity per volume than similar technologies. After refining the tech for several years using new materials, techniques and selecting better microbes, the team can now extract two kilowatts per cubic meter of refuse. As bacteria oxidizes organic matter, electrons -- rather than the hydrogen or methane that other methods rely upon -- are produced and run from an anode to a cathode within the device to create an electric current. Once implementation costs are cut down, the technology could power waste treatment plants and enable them to sell excess electricity. The contraption isn't just for processing what comes out of the porcelain throne -- it can also utilize materials ranging from grass straw to beer brewing byproducts. For now, however, the cell will tackle a pilot study before it inches closer to your local brewery or water treatment facility.

7 Questions That Lead to Incredibly Effective Marketing Campaigns

Like this? Share with friends.

If you?re launching a new product, designing a sale or getting your business ready now for your version of Black Friday or Small Business Saturday, there are series of steps that you need to include in the planning process in order to create the most effective campaign.

As you design a new campaign, brainstorm these questions with your staff and use the answers you come up with to create a series of launch action items.

1) What do we want our customer to do 30 days after the purchase?

This is such a great place to start because it lets you begin with the end in mind. So often all we think about is how to get the sale. This question forces you to think about how you get the result, the next sale or the referral and puts the emphasis squarely on creating a total customer experience.

2) What message will create the most interest?

For the most part no one really wants to buy what you sell, but they do want to achieve a result, save money, vanquish a demon, make money and feel more in control. How will you tell the story that helps them understand that?s what you?re selling? Get your messaging right, focus it on a narrowly defined ideal customer and start the process of education.

3) How many formats and delivery vehicles can we create for the message?

Would your message benefit from a series of supporting video messages, an eBook, blog posts, an online seminar? These days prospects have grown to expect a full suite of educational information to accompany a sales message. How will you let your prospect sample the results or the process they are considering?

4) What are the ways our message can intersect with our prospects?

Now it?s time to put your message in front of the prospect. How will you employ advertising, public relations, referral generation, email, partners and social networks to create the greatest amount of awareness, repetition and consistency of message aimed at your ideal target customer?

5) What is the ultimate pathway we want our prospect to travel?

Go through the precise ?ideal? way you want a prospect to become aware of your campaign and then design how you intend them to move from know, like and trust to try and buy. What small steps do you intend them to take to move closer to the decision to buy.

6) What is our call to action mechanism at each point along the way?

How are you going to motivate your prospects to take each progressive step? What words, buttons, links and value exchanges will you employ to keep your prospect engaged?

7) What is the next thing we intend to sell?

Some might find this last step a bit crass at this point, but you don?t have to think about it that way. If your products and services deliver a positive result, you should always be thinking about new ways to do that. Your campaigns should always have an integrated product or service suite element that automatically upsells, introduces additional options and even downsells when a prospect decides they aren?t ready to make a decision on your current campaign.

For example, as you offer a new consulting service, you could either offer some additional ?done for you? add ons for those that decide to buy or a $79 DIY program for those that pass on your initial offer.

I think the point here is that you adopt a routine and process that makes you stop and consider this holistic approach to campaign design. Often, by simply stopping for moment to consider these powerful questions you?ll find ways to make any offer much stronger and much more customer focused.

concrete houston, concrete repair houst - Concrete Houston: Settle ...

Concrete is used for different purposes and no one but contractors can only play best with concrete. It is a very common material used on construction sites and without having the best quality concrete, it is hard to establish a good and strong foundation. These days there are many construction projects initiated in Houston alone, and this is making contractors come in huge demand. In order to have the project rolling in a smooth manner, concrete Houston is the way to go. Be it a commercial site or a residential plot, concrete is used in almost every construction purpose.

In fact, concrete is duly used in most repair works too. So, this means that concrete is not just a necessity to create something new, it works wonders to repair the old structure as well. Many pavements and commercial layouts across the place are under repair and without much doubt, concrete is being highly used. It is recommended that concrete from a reliable source is more viable for the construction process. In order to have a hassle free constructing experience, contractors make sure to include the best quality concrete. A difference in quality spoils the complete project. Many times, it may not be visible during the initial stage of project; however, cracks and other damages will erupt in no time.

The wise thing to do is settle with a reliable concrete Houston company. Go with a company that has the reputation to provide with the best material. Many contractors are associated with companies that are known for concrete, the work is done in unison where the contractor establishes a design and initiates a project, and concrete supply is available. In addition to this, good quality concrete boosts the strength of the structure and makes it strong enough to last for a longer period of time. It is sensible to use concrete that offers a good appeal and feel to the structure as well. Some concrete structures leave a not so smooth surface, or the extreme would be too greasy. In order to get the perfect surface finish, rely only on the best.

How to define a spot for your presentationYou have solved your purpose and you?ve prepared a purpose for your presentation. So you are ready to go plan your vacation. In teaching, this really is called going from Point A to Point B. Point An is where you start your presentation and Point B may be the end of your presentation. When productive, Point B is the realisation of the reason you?ve prepared above.I consider a presentation as a vacation. Imagine you are arranging a trip. On the way you are planning to stop down and take pleasure in the local sights, looks and food. We?re planning to appear more at the ?stop off? points in step 3, but your journey is quite organized just like a train journey, for now think about what sort of journey your presentation might be.If your goal would be to notify. Three stops then we get off.If your goal is to influence, you might need to produce a more wonderful destination. How can you describe the final end to produce it sound more appealing? If your goal would be to motivate, perhaps you need to deliver the message with enthusiasm and more energy than usual. When you provide others? that is called ?selling your self on the theory. Do you really believe what you?re saying? If your purpose is always to offer or distinguish, you need to produce a contrast between different alternatives. How can you compare the choices? Disadvantages and advantages, advantages and cons.If your goal is always to demand or ask for a decision, perhaps you have made the offer as simple and obvious as possible? This exercise is more to flex your creativity and stimulate your thinking for the presentation. Spend a couple of minutes as a vacation, what suggestions or metaphors involves mind contemplating your presentation. Can you share any experiences you have had that will be useful to share with the audience?SamplesI could use my experience of spending an on the trains of Europe when I was a kid if my presentation touches on exploring, seeking ventures, or trying out new things.I could use my time exploring American flying on a cheap one-month, unrestricted journey overlook connecting it to contemplating big, making things happen or being creative.I could use my Ironman journey as a metaphor presenting a process or system, or bring out qualities like discipline, overcoming limitations and self-leadership.I could use my journey in developing Toastmasters in China as a for using risks, overcoming apathy, self-belief, living to values and teamwork.I could talk about how I changed my battles with shyness to become a professional speaker.Practice ItTake the example you?ve written above for your goal, and close your eyes and let your mind wander., Think about your presentation as a journey.
