Manuel Valls, the French Interior Minister, said on Thursday in Rabat that Islam is the second religion in France and that religious rites should be practiced in the framework of dignity and appropriate places of worship.
The French minister emphasizes that ?the time of the French government?s use of Islam for political purposes is over,? expressing his hope that France?s Muslims could practice their religion safely in respect of the laws of the Republic.
Valls said in remarks to reporters after talks with Ahmad Tawfeeq, the Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, that ?the French authorities want Islam to continue its presence and evolution in France under the laws of the Republic, provided that Muslims practice their rituals in peace.?
The French minister mentioned the mosque of Evry, the city where he used to be the mayor, as ?an example of what can be done from charitable work in a secular country like France,? adding that the mosque sends ?a message of peace and harmony reflected through the good and fruitful relations between Morocco and France.?
During their talks, the French and Moroccan ministers also discussed how to organize the practice of Moroccan religious affairs in France, the role of the Muslim Council of France as well as the training of imams.
The French official surveyed a wide range of issues discussed with Moroccan officials, notably Immigration, the exchange of students and security cooperation.
