Buyers and Cellars: Business Students Learn From South African ...

Student Photo: Nick Hamilton, Drake University

Back in Cape Town, business students headed to Warwick Estates in the famed Cape Winelands with Dr. Alysse Morton, this semester?s professor of Operations Management and Global Management. Morton, a Semester at Sea alumna who last sailed as a college student herself, brought her two classes on a one-of-a-kind field trip to the vineyards to better understand how a small business operates in today?s global market.

Warwick Estates is a third-generation family-owned winery in Stellenbosch, an area of the Cape famous for its vineyards, and the small company invited SAS students to witness wine production firsthand. ?We toured the facilities first,? explained Taylor Goddu, a business and psychology student from the College of William & Mary, ?then we went into the vineyards. Our guide literally plucked bunches of grapes straight from the vines for us to try them. They called it a ?Winelands Safari,? and they referred to the different varieties of grapes as members of the Big 5.? To clarify, the Big 5 is a term typically used on safaris to refer to big game like elephants and rhinos which, coincidentally, SAS students also saw in South Africa.

Warwick Estates, despite being a small operation in a competitive region, has crafted a sustainable industry and carved an international business model from production to export and every step in between. ?Their company was interesting because nothing goes to waste at all,? Goddu continued. ?They have a compost area and they pick the grapes, ferment, and filter them on site.? Additionally, Goddu explained, the family company has a remarkable international reach. Wine barrels are made using wood from France and the Balkans, and Warwick?s two main export countries are the USA and China, proving that everything is interconnected in today?s business sphere.

The students ended their day at the vineyard gathered around a long outdoor dining table on the sunlit brick patio. The winery served freshly baked ciabatta loaves, oak-smoked salmon, and sun-dried tomato pesto as the sun peaked in the afternoon sky. How?s that for a business field trip?

Goddu, a student in both of Morton?s classes, previously visited Bamboosero Bike Company in Ghana, and will soon be touring the Coca-Cola bottling plant in Shanghai along with her business classmates.

Creating a Successful Product Launch - Online Business Ideas and ...

By Reba Michael

New products are released on the internet daily. Some of them fail, while others succeed. The launch day happens to be one of the largest events for the product because this is when you have to impress others and do it correctly. This is the day when your product can use its market launch to its advantage and make a lot of money in online sales. And the launch day is the time when you can expect to hit the jackpot if you know what you're doing. This should let you see how having the proper product launch is extremely important for your product. Given below are a few important things that you need to keep in mind before going ahead with your product launch ...http://www.websiteautomationwizard.net

Distinct Sales Channel: One of the main things that you should focus on when you are launching your product are the kinds of things that your potential clients do before they will get your product. You have to be confident about the sales funnel that you provide so that your prospects will encounter a smooth process from the beginning to the end. When you are confident that you sales funnel is effective, it lets you steer clear of any problems that might arise during the ordering process. This will be a major part of why your launch is effective. Take care of every little detail so that the big picture turns out right.

Remember the Post Launch: Once the product has been introduced, it is time to concentrate on the post launch phase. This is an essential aspect of your product launch plan because you really do not want this to be your only successful product launch. You want to have a lot of consistent sales, which is why you do not want to do anything that will make your customers upset. The worst results that you could get would be when you have tons of sales on the day of the launch, but the sales go away afterwards. In order to not see these bad result, you should also work hard after the launch, because keeping happy customers will involve a lot of work.Consumer Wealth System

Perfection Isn't Everything: No matter what you have heard about how important it is to make sure that everything is perfect, don't get too bogged down in this idea. Your goal is to get the word out as quickly as possible to let time run its course without your being forced to wait for perfection to be achieved. You always have the option of working in the background. To use one example, if your product is software, you can do so much just by launching a working prototype. You need to come up with a good idea and figure out how to convince people that it solves a problem--that's it. As soon as you think that you're ready to begin talking about the product you're launching, you need to do it.

You need to remember that every single thing you do during your pre-launching can help you with your post-launch stuff so do not think twice about putting in some real effort to make it go well.

US official: Afghans are paid close too $50,000 per shooting death

By NBC News and news services

Updated at?11 a.m. ET: KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- The United States paid close to $50,000 in compensation for each Afghan killed in the shooting spree attributed to a U.S. soldier in southern Afghanistan, a U.S. official told NBC News on Sunday.

The official, who asked not to be named, would not say exactly how much was paid to the families, but added the amount was close to the $50,000 reported by?Afghan officials.

"The amount reflects the extraordinarily devastating nature of the incident," he said.

Average annual income in Afghanistan is $425, according to the BBC.

Staff Sgt. Robert Bales is accused of sneaking out of his base before dawn on March 11 then creeping into the houses of two nearby villages and opening fire on sleeping families within. The U.S. military has charged Bales with 17 murders.

Bales charged with 17 counts of murder in Afghanistan massacre

The 38-year-old soldier is accused of using his 9mm pistol and M-4 rifle, which was outfitted with a grenade launcher, to kill four men, four women, two boys and seven girls, then burning some of the bodies.

The defense attorney for Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, the soldier charged Friday with 17 counts of murder, has said the military lacks much of the physical evidence necessary to establish a solid case against his client. But prosecutors say there is ample evidence: surveillance video, shell casings and more. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.

The Associated Press earlier reported that the families of the dead received $50,000 for each person killed on Saturday at the governor's office, citing Kandahar provincial council member Agha Lalai.

Agha Lalai told the AP that each wounded person has received $11,000 and that they were told the money was from U.S. President Barack Obama. Community elder Jan Agha has confirmed the same figures.

The American official who handed over the money said it was not compensation, but the U.S. government offering to help the victims and their families, Kandahar provincial council member Haji Nyamat Khan said.

But a spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force, Col. Gary Kolb, said the money was compensation.

NBC's Atia Abawi, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Fitness craze drives leasing market

Have you noticed the increasing number of new fitness centers opening locations at shopping centers in your neighborhood?

It turns out that gyms were among the most active retailers leasing space throughout the Washington region in 2011. Approximately 20 percent of retail leases signed last year for 20,000 square feet or more were inked by fitness centers.

??The expanding fitness craze is one reason retail vacancy in the Washington region remained relatively low at 5.2 percent in 2011, with some fitness providers competing with other retailers for the best locations. For example, Fitness 4 Less beat out several other retail prospects to lease a 21,750-square-foot space at Bowie Plaza in Maryland. It was widely thought that another grocery store would end up leasing the space formerly occupied by Giant Food. Locally based Sport & Health was also among the more active chains. It signed a lease to occupy about 42,000 square feet in a new facility at Potomac Town Center in Woodbridge.

Retail real estate brokers say the area?s favorable demographics, including a high average level of education and disposable income, make the Washington area particularly attractive to fitness centers. Firms such as One Life Fitness, L.A. Fitness, Sport & Health, XSport Fitness, Planet Fitness, Fitness First and Fitness for Less all signed sizable leases in the area in 2011.

Furniture stores helped fill some of the available ?big box? retail spaces that had gone dark during the recession.

Grocery stores accounted for nine percent of the big box leases signed in 2011, such as Harris Teeter, which leased approximately 50,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor of a new building proposed at The Yards at Capitol Riverfront at 1212 4th St SE. More recently, grocery stores have demonstrated a willingness to move beyond the suburban big box concept and experiment with new formats, particularly in the District. Giant Food opted to close its store at 3336 Wisconsin Ave. NW in favor of a new multi-level 56,000-square-foot store in a new project with 137 apartment units.

Preventing Sports Injuries With Proper Car

Most of the adventure sports pose a certain level of risk of injuries. Some injuries are quite common and may not be too serious; however, few of them can be really serious. This is the reason why you should be always careful and concerned about your safety while you are playing any sports, such as BMX, Mountain Biking, Skiing, Roller Derby, skating etc.

Here are few points you should consider for ensuring your safety during sports:

Exercise regularly Regular exercise is often neglected by those who play sports. Many people are under this wrong impression that sports are themselves a good exercise. However, in order to keep your body flexible and conditioned, your chosen sport might not be sufficient. This is why you should train your body for resistance, strength, flexibility and balance. This reduces the chances of injuries and also, will increase your stamina for a better performance in your games.

Fall Gracefully in Adventure sports

In many adventure sports like skiing, mountain bike, snowboarding etc, you often fall.

This increases the possibility of getting injured. You can prevent the injuries by wearing suitable accessories, like full face helmets, knee pads, padded shorts and mouth guard. Also, you should learn to fall with grace such that the amount of pressure upon impact with ground distributes equally all over your body.

Use Protection Accessories as suitable for the sports

You should use suitable protection for all your body parts prone to injury during your sports. For example, since the chances of injury to your mouth, teeth, and jaws are quite high during skiing, it's better to wear a mouth guard.

In addition to a mouth guard, you should wear full face helmet while riding bike, and wear padded shorts and knee pads to protect your feet and thighs.

Learn the Nuances of Your Game

In addition to wearing padded shorts, wrist guards, knee pads etc for your protection, getting the right training from the right coach is also very important. With a proper training you learn the best ways to avoid the scenarios that expose you to injuries. For example, a coach can teach you how to land safely onto the ground when you are falling. Similarly, a coach can tell you about the best full face helmet that suits your needs precisely.

These tips will not only help you remain safe and sound, they will also help you improve your performance. After all, you can concentrate on your game only if you are not distracted by those nasty injuries too often.

How do inflation booms affect long term growth?

Investments won't contribute to an economy's long-term growth if they are the result of unsustainable money inflation, and what's worse, they could drag down fundamentally sound businesses in the process.

There was another thing in the The Economist?article that I wrote about yesterday that I think I should comment on, namely this:

But when growth picks up, investment recovers and along with it the capital stock. Mr Thoma says policy makers should not hold back on stimulative policies for fear of hitting a short-run supply ceiling, since that ceiling will rise as demand and investment pick up.

It is true that a higher level of investment will, assuming the investments are sound, increase long term growth and it is also true that this factor will limit the effect on price inflation that monetary inflation has.

However, investments that are the result of unsustainable monetary inflation will not increase long term growth as they will be revealed to be malinvestments during the following slumps. And what's worse, the slumps that follows often tends to drag down some businesses that are fundamentally sound, while many workers lose skills (and fails to get more useful skills that they might have gotten) in more useful industries.

But isn't it possible that some investments in research and development that are financed by inflationary credit could boost output permanently? Well, yes that is possible, just like it is possible that if you gave all unemployed workers $200,000 each to start businesses then some of those businesses could become success stories. But it is highly unlikely that these successes will become common enough to compensate for the damage done to other businesses and workers during slumps and the high cost for the government respectively.

Brain insulin resistance contributes to cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease

ScienceDaily (Mar. 23, 2012) ? Insulin resistance in the brain precedes and contributes to cognitive decline above and beyond other known causes of Alzheimer's disease, according to a new study by researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Insulin is an important hormone in many bodily functions, including the health of brain cells. The team identified extensive abnormalities in the activity of two major signaling pathways for insulin and insulin-like growth factor in non-diabetic people with Alzheimer's disease. These pathways could be targeted with new or existing medicines to potentially help resensitize the brain to insulin and possibly slow down or even improve cognitive decline.

This is the first study to directly demonstrate that insulin resistance occurs in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease. The study is now online in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

"Our research clearly shows that the brain's ability to respond to insulin, which is important for normal brain function, is going offline at some point. Insulin in the brain not only modulates glucose uptake, but also promotes the health of brain cells -- their growth, survival, remodeling, and normal functioning. We believe that brain insulin resistance may be an important contributor to the cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer's disease," said senior author, Steven E. Arnold, MD, professor of Psychiatry and Neurology. Arnold is also the director of the Penn Memory Center, a National Institute on Aging-designated Alzheimer's Disease Core Center. "If we can prevent brain insulin resistance from occurring, or re-sensitize brain cells to insulin with any of the currently available insulin-sensitizing diabetes medicines, we may be able to slow down, prevent, or perhaps even improve cognitive decline.

The risk of developing Alzheimer's disease is increased by 50 percent in people with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is due to insulin resistance and accounts for 90 percent of all diabetes. The defining clinical feature of Type 2 diabetes (and Type 1 "juvenile" diabetes) is hyperglycemia -- high levels of sugar in the blood -- but there is no evidence that the brain in Alzheimer's is hyperglycemic. Insulin acts differently in the brain than in the rest of the body. Researchers found that insulin resistance of the brain occurs in Alzheimer's disease independent of whether someone has diabetes, by excluding people with a history of diabetes from this study.

The investigators used samples of postmortem brain tissue from non-diabetics who had died with Alzheimer's disease, stimulated the tissue with insulin, and measured how much the insulin activated various proteins in the insulin-signaling pathways. There was less insulin activation in Alzheimer's cases than in tissue from people who had died without brain disease. Other proteins linked to insulin action in the brain were abnormal in Alzheimer's disease samples. These abnormalities were highly correlated with episodic memory and other cognitive disabilities in the Alzheimer's disease patients.

In tissue from people with Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), researchers found that changes to a protein called insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1 pS636/639 and pS616) in brain cells were linked to the severity of memory impairments regardless of age, sex, diabetes history, or apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene status. Levels of IRS-1 were also significantly associated with, but not likely to affect, the presence of amyloid beta plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, the signature markers of Alzheimer's disease. This suggests that insulin resistance contributes to cognitive decline independent of the classical pathology of Alzheimer's disease.

Researchers noted that three insulin-sensitizing medicines are already approved by the FDA for treatment of diabetes. These drugs readily cross the blood-brain barrier and may have therapeutic potential to correct insulin resistance in Alzheimer's disease and MCI. "Clinical trials would need to be conducted to determine the impact the drugs have on Alzheimer's disease and MCI in non-diabetic patients," said Dr. Arnold.

The study's lead author, Konrad Talbot, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor in Penn's Psychiatry department and co-lead author, Hoau-Yan Wang, Ph.D. is an Associate Medical Professor of Physiology and Pharmacology at the City University of New York. Along with Drs. Talbot and Arnold, the Perelman School of Medicine research team from Penn includes: Hala Kazi, Li-Ying Han, Robert L. Fuino, Krista R. Kawaguchi, Andrew J. Samoyed, from Psychiatry; Bryan A. Wolf (from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia) and John Q. Trojanowski, both from Penn's Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. In addition, other researchers from the City University of New York Medical School and the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center from Rush University Medical Center contributed equally to this work.

(AP) ? Facing heightened pressure to revive his presidential bid, Rick Santorum was forced to explain another apparent misstep as he courted Louisiana voters Friday, the eve of a critical contest in a Republican nomination battle that increasingly favors Mitt Romney.

Santorum said he would support the eventual GOP nominee ? if it isn't him ? despite what he insists are similarities between front-runner Romney and President Barack Obama that make them indistinguishable on some issues. He caused an intraparty uproar earlier in the week after suggesting he'd prefer a second term for Obama over a Romney presidency.

"I've said repeatedly and will continue to say, I'll vote for whoever the Republican nominee is and I will work for him," Santorum said as he walked back his original comments less than 24 hours before Louisiana polls were set to open. "Barack Obama is a disaster, but we can't have someone who agrees with him on some of the biggest issues of the day."

The situation underscored Santorum's challenges ahead of a Louisiana contest he's favored to win. Santorum has had success in the South, having won last week's contests in Alabama and Mississippi. Regardless of the outcome Saturday, however, Romney will have collected more delegates than his opponents combined as the race then turns to more favorable territory in the coming weeks.

Santorum's continued missteps are complicating a candidacy already struggling to overcome major financial and organizational deficiencies. Before losing this week's Illinois primary, Santorum hurt himself by declaring that neither the economy nor the nation's unemployment rate was his top concern.

"I think the biggest development of the last 24 hours was Sen. Santorum's remarkable mistake in suggesting that re-electing President Obama was acceptable under any circumstance," Republican contender Newt Gingrich told reporters in Port Fourchon, La. "I just want to make very clear that I could not disagree with him more strongly."

And as his GOP opponents fought amongst themselves, Romney went after Obama on the second anniversary of his landmark health-care law, previewing a key argument in a potential general election matchup.

Standing in front of signs that read, "Repeal & Replace ObamaCare," as he campaigned in Louisiana, Romney called Obama's signature health care law an "an unfolding disaster for the American economy, a budget-busting entitlement and a dramatic new federal intrusion into our lives."

In attacking the law days before Supreme Court arguments over its constitutionality, the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination also confronted an issue that has plagued him throughout the GOP primary process. As governor of Massachusetts, Romney signed a health care law that required everyone in the state to carry health insurance or pay a penalty. It's a state version of the national mandate that is the centerpiece of Obama's overhaul ? an idea that conservatives oppose as an example of government overreach.

Romney's steadfast support for the mandate at the state level has fueled continued conservative skepticism about his candidacy. And his attack on Obama's overhaul caught the attention of White House spokesman Jay Carney, who said Friday that the president would "not shy away from the opportunity to debate" the bill, particularly given Romney's background.

"That debate will be engaged in the fall if the Republican nominee feels so strongly about it," Carney said, referring to Romney as "one of the architects of this health care reform." ''As many have noted in both parties, the individual mandate provision of the president's Affordable Care Act bears striking similarities to the individual mandate that was put in place in Massachusetts."

Meanwhile, Obama catapulted the death in Florida of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, already the focus of major national attention, into the presidential campaign.

"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," Obama said.

Santorum was critical of local prosecutors, who declined to arrest the shooter, George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old neighborhood watchman who claimed self-defense and invoked Florida's' "Stand Your Ground" law. The law gives people wide latitude to use deadly force instead of retreating during a fight and explains why Zimmerman has not been arrested.

The failure to prosecute is a "chilling example of the horrible decisions made by people in this process," Santorum said. "Stand your ground is not doing what this man did."

Gingrich also criticized the shooter, whom he described as "a guy who'd found a hobby that's very dangerous."

Romney, like Obama, called the incident "a tragedy," and called for "a thorough investigation that reassures the public that justice is carried out with impartiality and integrity."

While attention to Martin's death overshadowed presidential politics at times Friday, Santorum tried to keep the pressure on Romney ahead of the Louisiana contest. Santorum argued that he is the only Republican candidate who can offer voters a stark contrast with Obama.

After testing his marksmanship with a .45 caliber semiautomatic Colt pistol, he told reporters: "If you don't have a choice, then a lot of voters are going to vote for what they have. That's why we have to have a choice."

Romney heads into Louisiana with a commanding delegate lead in the race to 1,144, the number needed to clinch the GOP nomination.

Romney has earned 563 delegates so far, compared to 263 for Santorum, 135 for Gingrich and 50 for Ron Paul, according to an Associated Press tally.

Louisiana offers a total of 46 delegates, but only 20 will be up for grabs in Saturday's primary. An additional 23 will be selected at the party's state convention in June and three others go to the state's Republican National Committee members.

And while Santorum tried to recover from one misstep, a supporter in the audience added an off-message wrinkle. As he fired the pistol, a woman in the crowd shouted: "Pretend it's Obama."

Santorum was wearing protective ear muffs. He said later that he didn't hear the remark but denounced it as "absurd."

The Secret Service, which provides security for Santorum, was trying to identify the woman.

Why Liquid Health supplements Better than Dry Solutions ? Submit ...

The Trouble With Supplements

As a reader of the post there is certainly previously a fine opportunity that you happen to be effectively aware in the a lot of positive aspects the supplementation with supplements and mineral deposits along with products can offer for your health and health extras. You are also possibly such as the vast majority of folks that have been eating a number of dry products day-to-day as being the way to reach the dietary health supplement objectives and health add-ons. If you?re like me, and also like quite a few others I know, you might find your self swallowing over 20 dried up and frequently big capsules a day in order to meet your nutritional and other health supplement focuses on. There is an substitute you do not be aware of nevertheless, that is certainly certainly liquid vitamins and mineral deposits.

In regards to the specific advantages of finding liquid nutritional vitamins in addition to vitamins and minerals, the very first trigger that normally comes up is the capability to steer clear of the unpleasant swallowing of numerous dried out supplements day-to-day (and if you have basically used some of those particularly substantial multivitamin products, you?ll know what Now i?m referring to). Speaking of organic liquid multi vitamins and minerals, you will be pleased to understand that liquid vitamins and minerals and various fluid supplementations can be extremely varied, and include things like multivitamin formulations far too, to ensure that inside a just one liquid dose you are able to obtain your everyday balanced health wants. There couldn?t why most of us remain swallowing numerous pills to begin with is the fact that when you finally element inside finish of the capsule alone and all one other gel agents, there is hardly very much area left more than for your health supplement by itself. For that reason most of these supplements suffer from confined room, requiring people to swallow a great number of of them in buy to accomplish our nutritional goals. Despite the fact that a greater portion of a minor problem, you also may possibly not have considered any psychological problem with traditional product capsules, because they appear too much including standard treatments. Feeling like you?re eating lots of treatments each morning goes against your health and fitness aims of using supplements within the first location, which would be being proactive along with your wellbeing in terms of avoiding sickness before it commences. Taking fluid supplementations and health equipment feels a lot additional like eating a rudimentary vitality drink compared to taking remedies.

The last benefit of fluid supplementing relates towards the reality that considerably significantly less chemical compounds and other chemical preservatives are necessary. Yes, is very handy with their long shelf life of typically a few years at area heat range. How is that obtained on the other hand? Properly sadly through plenty of further chemical compounds and preservatives. Such nasty additions not just hinder the actual bioavailability with the supplementations you might be wanting to carry but sometimes possibly damage your physique, particularly the kidneys and also liver which are responsible for eliminating this kind of waste items. In light of all these rewards, I would highly suggest giving fluid minerals and nutritional vitamins a test, in spite of being a whole lot less-known than health accessories in pill variety.

What Will Happens Depends on You - Ask Harriete

My KICKSTARTER Project is LIVE and your help can make a difference!!!

Yes, your help can advocate for arts in education.

This KICKSTARTER project is perhaps the most uncertain thing that I have ever done, but crowd source funding is dependent on everyone helping a little to bring a big project to fruition. In this case, I am asking the arts community to support the making of a video.

Pencil Makes a Point KICKSTARTER PROJECTThe video Pencils Make a Point is about the impact of standardized testing on education and raises a voice for the arts in education.

Every contribution to this KICKSTARTER project will receive a reward. There are 11 different REWARDS for various levels from $10 to $2,500. Check all the rewards on my web site where each has a picture posted.

The goal is to raise $10,000 to cover the production of the 8-10 minute video.
If everyone on "Crafthaus" and my Facebook friends each give $10 the goal will be achieved. That is what crowd sourcing is all about!!!!!!! So far I have recieved $480.

Envelope1920I also created more personal Rewards for larger contributions. Reward images and descriptions are on my web site. Descriptions of the rewards (without the images) are also on KICKSTARTER.

If the $10,000 goal is not achieved on KICKSTARTER, no one is charged for their contribution. I also don't get any of the money. Poof! The project disappears. There are 26 days to bring this project to the goal.

Please share with you friends and family. The success of this entire project depends on you.

_MG_7078improvedDuring this 30 day campaign on KICKSTARTER, I will share the experience of making a documentary video, working with online sites, and tips you can use yourself in professional development for your own work.

All of the donations go to funding the expenses in producing a professional quality video such as camera operators, audio recording, video footage, editing, and music. Video is a very expensive medium usually costing $3,000 to $5,000 per minute. It is team effort. No wonder Hollywood budgets are so huge!.

If you are interested in more information about the four year project in creating the installation Pick Up Your Pencils, Begin, the documentation is available on my web site.
We're getting great support!!!!!!!!!.......

AMAT_Foundation_Logo_v3sSo far the project has had great success with a two page article in American Craft and a grant for $5,000 from Applied Materials Foundation for the Arts Council of Silicon Valley. (More information about this in another post.)

Please become part of the success with your donation.

For twelve years I have shared my "lessons learned through experience" in the Professional Guidelines, the Professional Development Seminar, and ASK Harriete. My goal is to help others succeed in their professional careers bringing their work to a larger audience.

Can I ask for your help to give a voice to arts in education?
