The Corolla is the best-selling car of all time

A 2010 edition of Toyota's Corolla, the best-selling vehicle of all time.

By 24/7 Wall St., Douglas A. McIntyre

The most successful car in history may be the Ford Model T. While other models may have sold more vehicles, Ford managed to sell nearly 17 million cars from 1908 to 1927 -- a period when car ownership was rare compared to today. The Model T was so successful that nearly every other best-selling car adopted its formula.

The Model T was inexpensive to buy, inexpensive to operate, reliable and built by a large company that had hundreds of dealerships and trained mechanics.

The other top-selling vehicles, from the VW Passat to the Toyota Corolla, share all of these characteristics. The best-selling cars through history have appealed to a broad buyer base because they are within the reach of the masses.

The best-selling vehicles have several other notable features in common. For one, the majority were introduced just before or around the same time that gas prices began to rise rapidly in the early 1970s, primarily because of the Arab oil embargo. Car companies offered 4-cylinder, light and fuel-efficient cars that allowed people to drive without badly hurting household budgets. Many of these cars continue to sell well today as gas prices are relatively high around the world.

Many of these cars also are manufactured and sold around the world. The Beetle is sold in the U.S. and Europe. The Passat is built in both the U.S. and China. Several of the best-selling cars from Japan are sold in most major countries around the world. Once a car proved its appeal with consumers, it made economic sense for a manufacturer to use the same base chassis and engine at plants on different continents.

24/7 Wall St. looked at best-selling car data from a number of sources. The sources included major media outlets that cover the auto industry, research firms, and car companies that keep lists of their own best-selling cars.

24/7 Wall St.: The Nine American Cities Nearly Destroyed by the Recession

1. Corolla (1966 - )

  • ?Sales: 37.5 million
  • ?Parent: Toyota (NYSE: TM)
  • ?Price: $16,130 (most recent)
  • ?Type: inexpensive 4-cylinder sedan

The Corolla has been the flagship of the world?s third-largest car company for more than four decades. The car has gone through 10 generations of model upgrades. It was the perfect car for Japan when it was introduced -- small and fuel efficient. It was a perfect car for America when oil and gas prices soared and then fluctuated after the early 1970s oil embargo. The car always has been outfitted with a small 4-cylinder engine. The current base motor output is 132 horsepower and gets as much as 35 MPG. Ironically, an even more fuel-efficient car -- the Toyota Prius hybrid -- outsold the Corolla in Japan in 2010.

Ford's venerable F-series pickup trucks, including this F-150, are the best-selling light trucks of all time.

2.?F-Series (1948 - )

  • ?Sales: 35 million
  • ?Parent: Ford (NYSE: F)
  • ?Price: $22,990 (most recent)
  • ?Type: Pickup

The F-Series has been America?s best-selling full-body pickup for more than 30 years. It certainly has faced significant competition over the years, especially from the Dodge Ram, Chevy Silverado and GM Sierra, which are all built by Chrysler and GM. More recently, other competitors entered the market, such as Honda with its Ridgeline, Toyota with its Tundra, and Nissan with its Titan. But none has been able to drop the F-Series from its spot at the top of the pickup market. One of the strengths of the F-Series is that it comes in so many models that have a broad appeal across a wide set of customers. The base F-150 costs less than $23,000. Larger models are used in the construction and farm business. These have engines with outputs of well over 300 horsepower and dual rear tires. The F-450 Super Duty King Ranch has a sticker price of $63,615.

The Volkswagen Golf, seen here recently in a showroom in Istanbul, Turkey, is among the best-selling vehicles of all time.

3. Golf (1974 - )

  • ?Sales: 27.5 million
  • ?Parent: Volkswagen
  • ?Price: $17,995 (most recent)
  • ?Type: inexpensive 4-cylinder sedan

The Golf is VW?s least expensive compact car. When it debuted in 1974, it was originally called the Rabbit in America, and was intended to be the Beetle?s successor. Like several of the other cars on this list, it is built to be within the budgets of millions of people, as well as inexpensive to operate after purchase. The popularity of the Golf, Beetle and Passat has helped drive VW to the number two car manufacturer in the world for 2011. The Golf sells for less than $18,000 in the U.S. The base model is a 2-door with a 4-cylinder, 2.5 liter engine. VW still lags every major global manufacturer in U.S. sales. It has counted on the Golf to help close that gap. But last year it only sold 324,000 cars (all models) in the U.S., which gave it a 2.2 percent market share -- a disappointing performance for a multinational that sold over 8.1 million vehicles worldwide.

4. Beetle (1933 - )

  • ?Sales: 23.5 million through 2011
  • ?Parent: Volkswagen
  • ?Price: $19,795 (most recent)
  • ?Type: inexpensive rear-engine 4-cylinder

The Beetle is VW?s flagship. Launched eight decades ago, following orders by Adolf Hitler for a family-sized ?people?s car,? it was designed by sports car enthusiast Ferdinand Porsche. The vehicle has changed very little since the 1940s. It is unusual among economy cars because its engine is in its rear and is air cooled. The Beetle also comes with a diesel engine, which is a rarity among passenger cars. New diesel engines get mileage similar to hybrids. The current version of the Beetle sold in the U.S. has a small 2.5 liter, 4-cylinder engine and sells for under $20,000. To appeal to more upscale buyers and those who want better engine performance, VW offers a Turbo-powered model for nearly $30,000. VW must regret it did not market the Beetle more aggressively in the U.S. when it was among the best-selling small cars in the U.S. Japanese models and a move by the Big Three to offer fuel-efficient vehicles pushed the Beetle nearly out of the U.S. market.

24/7 Wall St.: The Ten Most Hated Companies in America

5. Escort (1968 - 2000)

  • ?Sales: 20 million
  • ?Parent: Ford
  • ?Price: $11,950 (2000)
  • ?Type: inexpensive 4-cylinder 2-door/4-door

The Escort was a small, fuel-efficient car introduced in England in 1967 and then throughout much of Europe over the following two years. The vehicle was Ford?s answer to the army of small cars made by European manufacturers like Fiat, Renault and VW. All were meant to use little gas and be cheap to operate. Most Escorts have small engines of less than 2 liters. This was enough to power 2-door, 3-door and 4-door versions of the car in a region in which gas is usually very expensive. There were six generations of Escorts. Each version offered more options and larger engines than the one before it. The Escort was replaced by the Ford Focus. A car called the Escort was sold in the U.S. from 1981 to 2003, but its great success was in Europe. That new car, sold in the U.S., unrelated in its design, is not counted here.

Solar flare sets off auroras around the Arctic Circle

Web edition : Monday, January 30th, 2012

Earth?s nearest star erupted late on January 22, belching out a solar flare. At the same time the sun launched a blast of hot gas known as a coronal mass ejection toward Earth.

A day later, when the particles slammed into the atmosphere, they set off auroras around the Arctic Circle. Fast-moving protons that came along for the ride also triggered a solar radiation storm, the biggest seen since the ?Halloween storms? of October 2003.

Scientists expect such powerful solar blasts to become more common as the sun moves toward a predicted peak of activity in 2013.

94% Hugo

'Hugo'. Charming, touching, and simply beautiful. Thank you, Martin Scorsese, for a wonderful love letter to films and purpose.Asa Butterfield's Hugo Cabret had me caring for him from the first minute, and brings a huge amount of heart to the central character of this story. He's a lonely kid trying to find his place in the world, and I really felt for him. Film for Hugo is a chance to see dreams and the fantastical come alive, while at the same time providing a way to escape and forget, though it subsequently acts to reminisce Every mention of his father had the 3D getting a little blurry. The emotional punch isn't limited to Hugo though. Ben Kingsley delivers a fine supporting performance as Georges Melies, and the resolution of his secondary, but intertwined plot, impacts in an equally big way.Sacha Baron Cohen's Station Inspector is a barrel of laughs, especially his vernacular when it comes to insulting the various characters of the station, and Chloe Moretz shines once again.Being so passionate about movies, the Melies storyline and history carried even greater meaning to me, as I've recently been listening to Raphael Shargel's 'Understanding Movies', with the first chapter being devoted to the Lumiere brothers and Georges Melies. Getting more of the history behind, and actually seeing works such as 'Arrival of a Train' and 'A Trip to the Moon' had me invested that little bit more. This would make a perfect double feature with 'Cinema Paradiso'!

How the Etruscan Pygmy Shrew inspired a bewhiskered disaster relief robot (Yahoo! News)

Scientists have long been working on the creation of robots for?search and rescue missions, like the kind undertaken by disaster relief crews following last year's?tsunami in Japan.?Now, a group of researchers came up with a successful design for a robot that can be used for operations in pitch black locations. Inspired by an?Etruscan shrew, one of the tiniest mammals in the world, this robot called Shrewbot is fitted with synthetic whiskers that work just like the real thing.

Etruscan shrews are blind, and rely on their whiskers to get around and capture prey. Like real shrews, the Shrewbot's whiskers pick up vibrations from its environment, which its system then translates into information about shape and texture. Shrewbot's developers from the Bristol Robotics Laboratory and the University of Sheffield Active Touch Laboratory chose to study and design robots that navigate with the?sense of touch, because the sense of sight has already been extensively researched.

In the future, the blind but bewhiskered Shrewbot could be sent to places and undertake tasks unsafe for humans, just like the?radiation-sniffing and the?debris-clearing robots that helped out in?Fukushima. Professor Tony Pipe of Bristol explained: "There are real advantages to this form of tactile sensing for robots that we are just beginning to understand. For example this whisker technology could have applications in dark, dangerous or smoke filled environments which are unsafe for humans, where in future we might want?robots to go."

Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana celebrate at Sundance (AP)

PARK CITY, Utah ? Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana came to the Sundance Film Festival to promote their closing-night film, "The Words."

The two actors play a married couple in the movie, which follows an aspiring writer who gains fame when he finds an old manuscript and passes it off as his own.

The pair avoided any appearance of their reported off-screen romance by staying apart from one another while posing for photos and giving interviews to support the film. Saldana did affectionately touch Cooper as they passed in a hallway, though.

Both had been to Sundance before, where snow fell throughout the festival and the weather dipped into the teens. Still, Saldana maintained her fashionista edge.

"I did bring warm stuff but I also brought fashion-y stuff. Come on. You've got to pay the price, even if it's too cold," she said.

The 33-year-old actress wore green suede shoes with spiked stiletto heels despite the slushy conditions.

"They're kind of fabulous. They're also lethal. So I have to be really careful, and somebody has to be careful not to piss me off," she said with a smile. "Yeah right. I'm just trying not to fall. It's like `Please don't fall. Please don't fall,' if I'm walking."

Cooper's first time at the festival was 12 years earlier with the eventual cult comedy hit "Wet Hot American Summer."

"I wasn't even able to get into the screening," he recalled.

Saldana said playing Cooper's wife in "The Words" made her think about how she approaches relationships and the concept of unconditional love.

"Like how unconditional am I when I'm in love. Do you bypass certain things? Would I be able to be with a man ? or with someone ? that feels incomplete, doesn't matter what we do?" she said. "If we change this, if we get married, if we have a baby ? just someone that feels incomplete. Would I be able to deal with that for so many years and accept them as who they are and go, `Come as you are. This is who I fell in love with and I don't want to change you?'

"I'm not like that, which is why I wanted to play her, because it was a challenge, you know. Look at me, I totally said I'm not unconditional at all. So awful."

Cooper's part as author-plagiarist Rory Jansen is his second writerly role after playing a novelist in last year's "Limitless." But that's just coincidence, he said. Despite having a degree in English, the 37-year-old actor says he typically only writes in his "girlnal."

"Journal, sorry," he said. "That's a `Wet Hot' reference. Paul Rudd says that."

Saldana, meanwhile, is in the midst of shooting the "Star Trek" sequel in Los Angeles with director J.J. Abrams and much of the original's cast.

"It's wonderful because I've been dying to work with the cast again, to work with JJ," she said. "I love him so much. He's such an amazing human being and such an amazing storyteller and a great director, so what more can I ask for? I start the year and I'm literally going back to a very familiar environment and being a part of a great story."

"The Words," which also stars Dennis Quaid, Jeremy Irons, Ben Barnes and Olivia Wilde, premiered Friday. It was acquired early in the festival by CBS Films, which plans to release it theatrically in the fall. Sundance continues through Sunday.

New California law combats human slavery

California law requires companies to make clear what they are doing to rid their foreign suppliers from the use forced labor or human trafficking.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, a time to educate people that slavery?exists today and build support for the fight to stop it.

Dowser.org reports on the practical and human elements of social innovation, highlighting creative approaches to social change to help people understand how to build better communities and a better world.

Recent posts

But this January also happens to be the month that a new law in California has come into effect, the first of its kind in the United States, and one that has the potential to do more than just raise awareness of human trafficking and actually make a real dent in the problem itself.

Human trafficking and forced labor are largely hidden problems, but they persist in just about every country in the world (including in the US) whether it's in cotton fields that feed our demand for clothing or in factories where our electronics are assembled. As consumers, we are all connected to human trafficking and slavery through the goods we use every day.

But a large hurdle in eradicating slavery is how disconnected those final products are from the conditions that produced them.

IN PICTURES: Mumbai laundry workers

The supply chains that companies rely on to bring consumer goods to the market have become so fragmented that a grocery or apparel company has no idea ? sometimes by design, sometimes inadvertently ? that it is enabling the forced exploitation of workers. The retail clothing chain Gap was the target of activist campaigns and got a lot of bad press in the late 1990s for using exploitative child labor in factories that produced Gap clothing. But because stores like Gap outsource labor to factories and do not own them outright (and Gap was never the only one to take this route), they can shirk responsibility for what happens within those facilities.

A new rule in California seeks to put some of that responsibility back into the corporate offices of large businesses, so that it's no longer enough for a company to say it doesn't know the conditions in which its products are grown or manufactured. The California Transparency in Supply Chains Act, which was signed into law last year but only went into effect this month, requires companies to disclose, in a prominent place on their websites, what they are doing to combat forced labor and human trafficking in their supply chains.

The law applies to any manufacturing and retail company with $100 million or more in sales that does business in California; one estimate predicted the law would impact 3,200 global companies. To return to Gap as an example ? in part because a report tailored to the California legislation, Effective Supply Chain Accountability, said Gap has exhibited several model practices in terms of cleaning up its supply chain ? the company created a vendor code of conduct that meets core International Labor Organization standards, followed years later by a human rights policy, and has charted its level of influence over each stage of its supply chain.

Disclosing exactly those types of efforts is what is now required by the new law. A company must indicate the extent to which it audits suppliers for trafficking and slavery, verifies supply chains to evaluate and address risks of human trafficking and whether an independent third party is used for the verification process, maintains internal accountability standards, trains employees on this issue, and certifies that materials used in a product comply with human-trafficking laws in the countries where business is conducted.

There are still some fuzzy points: Certification, for example, has no standard definition. And there is no certifier for slavery-free, the way there is for organic or fair trade. But the law is in effect, companies have started publishing the information necessary to comply ? and they have been advised not to make false or exaggerated claims that misrepresent what they're actually doing. There can be legal consequences.

Ill-fated Italian ship inspired by EU (Reuters)

MIAMI (Reuters) ? Given the fading fortunes of the European Union, a good deal of symbolism can probably be read into the fact that it helped inspire the design of the Italian ocean liner that hit a rock and capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio two weeks ago.

And it was indeed the EU, the economic and political confederation of member states with a combined population of more than 500 million people, that served as the central motif for fashioning the Costa Concordia's interior, said veteran Miami architect Joe Farcus.

"Usually I design ships around what I call the central idea, the point of interest of something that would be the basis of a story," Farcus said.

"On this ship, the idea was for each public room to take a style that was evocative of every country in Europe, in the European Union," he said. "I think it worked out that every country in the European Union sort of equaled the number of public rooms on the ship."

Poring over photos of the vessel's over-the-top interior, images taken before its accident and filled to overflowing with bold primary and neon colors, Farcus acknowledged that it was hard to say now exactly which of the rooms represented any particular EU member country.

But he said the towering central atrium took its design cues from the Art Nouveau styles of Belgium, in recognition of its role as the seat of the European Parliament. The piano bar, one of 13 watering holes aboard the ship, was done in Hungarian style because he is of Hungarian descent, Farcus said.

Costa Cruises Chairman and Chief Executive Pier Luigi Foschi also had the EU very much in mind when he named the ship, which was officially christened in July 2006, the Concordia, Farcus said.

"INCREDIBLY SAD"

As in Concord, the name signifies agreement or harmony and friendly, peaceful relations.

"That is how Mr. Foschi came up with the name Concordia, meaning a peaceful gathering of many cultures," Farcus said.

"It was very, very interesting," Farcus said on Wednesday at his well-appointed, palm-fringed Miami Beach home.

"To think of her where she is now is so incredibly sad," the 67-year-old architect said of the Concordia.

The ship is one of dozens Farcus has designed in a career spanning more than 30 years for Carnival Corp, the parent of Italy's Costa.

"I don't know anything beyond what I've read in the various media reports but it seems like it was a horrible human error situation, which accidents often are," said Farcus, when asked about what really happened on the Concordia on January 13. At least 16 people were killed and more are missing.

"Clearly the damage to the ship was catastrophic," he said, referring to the "gigantic gash" that tore into the hull of the Concordia and quickly caused it to capsize.

"The list apparently happened practically immediately," he said. "But there still seemed to be just about an hour where basically whatever should have been done, or could have been done, wasn't done for whatever reason. Time will tell that story, I guess."

Though Farcus once earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the architect behind the first passenger ship ever to exceed 100,000 tons, he said the size of gargantuan cruise liners, some of which now boast as much as 225,000 tons, was something that would now be subject to close scrutiny in any post-Concordia safety reviews.

"This raises issues and rightly so, it should be looked at," he said.

"If it floats it can sink."

Sergio Mendes says 'Rio' sequel likely (AP)

NEW YORK ? Sergio Mendes, who scored an Oscar nomination for his song "Real In Rio," says the animated film will most likely have a sequel.

Mendes said "Rio" director Carlos Saldanha may want to tie the sequel to the 2014 World Cup, which will take place in Brazil.

"I think the plan is for the movie to come three or four months before the World Cup," Mendes said Tuesday afternoon.

"Fox has been talking about (it) and it looks like it's going to happen," he continued. "We're going to have a meeting I think next week and Carlos is coming to town to tell us the story, and it looks like it's a go."

Fox said in an email Wednesday that the "success of the first film was the start of a franchise," but added that "no script or deals" are in place.

Mendes and Saldanha are from Brazil. Mendes said creating music for the film ? about birds adventuring to Rio de Janeiro with the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway ? was special "because that's my hometown."

Mendes shares his nomination with Siedah Garrettd and Carlinhos Brown. He said he's not feeling pressure to create new music for the "Rio" sequel following his Oscar nod.

"I take one thing at a time," he said. "Right now I'm celebrating."

Ceramics during the Automotive Industry | peersupportworks.com

However several of us will not be mindful of it, ceramics can be described as normal material utilized in the automotive marketplace as it gives several many advantages. A number of makers are picking flex fuel engines to help keep their engines up-to-date together with the existing economy and surroundings. A number of from the machines within our motor vehicles really want ceramics to function correctly and successfully; more details in the many advantages of ceramics inside the automotive marketplace and their machines and pieces might be found in the .

Vehicles

Ever since 1920, ceramics have taken an active piece in glass windows and in addition as for spark plugs. Newer designs of cars have ceramic pieces inside of the catalytic convertor making sure that it gets considerably better fuel mileage and it?ll also lessen the exhaust emissions. Experiencing considerably better exhaust emissions is generally considerably better for us because it is one of the conditions that can be examined each year just before we can easily get our license tags.

As time goes by, additional plus much more vehicles are acquiring ceramic pieces integrated into their style and design. By way of example, more recent designs of cars have oxygen sensors that be certain which the combustion operates blog at an optimal stage.

To elaborate further, essentially any machines noticed inside of an automobile which has an electrical part to it, also could have a ceramic part. here By way of example, they can be utilized in electrical windows, and in addition seat changes for any smoother plus much more efficient job.

Andrew Zimmern Cooks Up Bizarre Foods For Reluctant 'Today Show' Hosts Amy Robach And Lester Holt

Andrew Zimmern stopped by the "Today Show" on Saturday, January 21 to promote the new season of his show, "Bizarre Foods America", airing Monday, January 23 at 10 p.m. ET. Unlike past seasons, this season takes place solely in the U.S., to explore the food culture in our own backyards, so to speak.

In the segment below, Zimmern introduces the "benign" turtle to a particular squeamish Amy Robach, co-anchor for the Saturday "Today Show" along with Lester Holt. He then prepares a geoduck, as Robach continues to squirm. But when Zimmern shows a braised raccoon, she really loses it. Although she eventually tries a very small piece of the meat (though herself and Holt avoid the stuffed pig stomach), her reaction proves exactly why this is great timing for Zimmern's show to air. Hopefully, as a result of this season, people won't be so scared to try unfamiliar foods, and will be able to learn to embrace the bizarre.

Watch the squirming below:

Breaking Dawn Surpasses $700 Million in Box Office Haul, On Verge of Twilight Saga Crown

It may have been the worst reviewed of all chapters in The Twilight Saga, but Breaking Dawn: Part 1 has successfully sought revenge at the box office:

The film blew past $700 million in global box office haul this weekend and, with receipts not even counted yet in Japan and China, will undoubtedly soon be crowned the highest-grossing installment in the franchise.

New Moon grossed $709.8 million during its run.

This exciting news comes just a few weeks before Breaking Dawn is released on DVD (February 11!) and also coincides with talk that the franchise could extend beyond part 2, which hits theaters on November 18.

Would you want to see The Twilight Saga continue?

Deputy head of Libya's NTC quits after protests (Reuters)

BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) ? The deputy head of Libya's ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) said on Sunday he was resigning after a series of protests against the new government which the country's leader warned could drag Libya into a "bottomless pit."

Late on Saturday, a crowd demanding the government's resignation smashed windows and forced their way into the NTC's local headquarters in Benghazi, in the most serious show of anger at the new authorities since Muammar Gaddafi was ousted.

The NTC has the support of the Western powers who helped force out Gaddafi in a nine-month conflict, but it is unelected, has been slow to restore basic public services, and some Libyans say too many of its members are tarnished by ties to Gaddafi.

Abdel Hafiz Ghoga, vice-president of the NTC and one of the council's highest-profile members, was the target of some of the protesters' criticism. He said he was quitting to try to limit the damage to the council.

"My resignation is for the benefit of the nation and is required at this stage," Ghoga told Al Jazeera television.

He said the national consensus that helped the country rise up and end Gaddafi's 42-year rule had not lasted into peace-time, giving way instead to what he called an atmosphere of "hatred."

"I do not want this atmosphere to continue and negatively affect the National Transitional Council and its performance," said Ghoga, who also acted as the NTC's spokesman.

Ghoga is one of the most senior of Libya's new rulers to have left office since Gaddafi's overthrow in August. His departure will revive doubts about the NTC's ability to form a cohesive and effective government.

He was jostled by an angry crowd of students when he visited a university in Benghazi on Thursday. He had to be pulled away to safety.

"BOTTOMLESS PIT"

NTC chief Mustafa Abdel Jalil, speaking in Benghazi earlier on Sunday, appealed to the protesters to be more patient.

"We are going through a political movement that can take the country to a bottomless pit," he said. "There is something behind these protests that is not for the good of the country."

"The people have not given the government enough time and the government does not have enough money. Maybe there are delays, but the government has only been working for two months. Give them a chance, at least two months."

In a glimpse of the lack of coordination which Western diplomats say pervades the workings of the NTC, Abdel Jalil was asked if Ghoga would be stepping down and said he would not.

The protests in Benghazi, in eastern Libya, are particularly troubling for the NTC because the city was the birthplace of the revolt against Gaddafi's 42-year rule. It was the site of the NTC's headquarters during the revolt.

Abdel Jalil said he met with religious leaders and protesters to discuss their grievances.

He said he had accepted the resignation of the head of the Benghazi local council, Saleh El-Ghazal. Like most Libyan officials, the head of the council was appointed but Abdel Jalil said his successor would be chosen through an election.

Cycling To Raise Funds for Cancer Patients | TopNews United States

It has been reported that as many as 7,000 cyclists would be taking part in the coming fundraising event with the aim of helping the researchers in conducting further research in the field of cancer. The cancer is a deadly disease, which leads to deaths of millions every year all over the world.

The cyclists would be ridding their cycles from Norwood to Adelaide Hills and the race would end at Tanunda, located in the Barossa Valley. In 2011, a similar event helps the Cancer Council to raise an amount of $400,000.

Brenda Wilson, the Chief Executive of the Cancer Council of chief executive of the Cancer Council was reported as saying, ?All of the people riding for a reason including myself have lobbied our friends and colleagues to support us in this ride and personally I think I've raised nearly $3,000 this year and there are a lot of people who have raised a lot more?.

It has been informed that the Opposition Leader and Sport Minister, Tony Abbott and Mark Arbib, respectively, would also be taking part in the event. Besides, many celebrities from the football field and other would also be taking part in the cycling event.

There are about 500 cyclists who have decided to take part in the event in the memory of their loved ones whom they lost to cancer. International visitors are also said to be taking part in the fund raising event.

Cancer has been taking its toll over the life of many for long. However, there is not any permanent cure for it. The money raised through the event would be directed towards Cancer Council and will be used towards improving the lives of cancer patients. So, this year do take part in the fund raising activities to help cancer patients relish their lives.

Multiple partners not the only way for corals to stay cool

Saturday, January 21, 2012

Recent experiments conducted at the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) produced striking results, showing for the first time that corals hosting a single type of "zooxanthellae" can have different levels of thermal tolerance ? a feature that was only known previously for corals with a mix of zooxanthellae.

Zooxanthellae are algal cells that live within the tissue of living coral and provide the coral host with energy; the relationship is crucial for the coral's survival. Rising ocean temperatures can lead to the loss of zooxanthellae from the coral host, as a consequence the coral loses its tissue colour and its primary source of energy, a process known as 'coral bleaching'. Globally, coral bleaching has led to significant loss of coral, and with rising ocean temperatures, poses a major threat to coral reefs.

It was previously known that corals hosting more than one type of zooxanthellae could better cope with temperature changes by favouring types of zooxanthellae that have greater thermal tolerance. However, until now it was not known if corals hosting a single type of zooxanthellae could have different levels of thermal tolerance.

Results recently published in the prestigious scientific journal, Nature Climate Change, showed corals that only host a single type of zooxanthellae may in fact differ in their thermal tolerance. This finding is important because many species of coral are dominated by a single type of zooxanthellae.

PhD student, Ms Emily Howells from the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (CoECRS) at James Cook University, Townsville, together with scientists from AIMS and CoECRS, collected two populations of a single type of zooxanthellae (known as C1) from two locations on the Great Barrier Reef. The population collected from Magnetic Island near Townsville experiences average ocean temperatures 2?C higher than the population collected from the Whitsunday Islands. In experiments at AIMS, young corals were treated with one or other of the two different populations of zooxanthellae, and exposed to elevated water temperatures, as might occur during bleaching events.

The results were striking. Corals with zooxanthellae from the warmer region coped well with higher temperatures, staying healthy and growing rapidly, whilst corals with zooxanthellae from the cooler region suffered severe bleaching (loss of the zooxanthellae) and actually reduced in size as they partly died off.

Madeleine van Oppen, ARC Future Fellow at AIMS, says the research results will likely have a major impact on the field, as until now corals associating with the same type of zooxanthellae have been viewed as physiologically similar, irrespective of their geographical location.

"Our research suggests that populations of a single type of zooxanthellae have adapted to local conditions as can be seen from the remarkably different results of the two populations used in this study. If zooxanthellae populations are able to further adapt to increases in temperature at the pace at which oceans warm, they may assist corals to increase their thermal tolerance and survive into the future." says Emily Howells.

"However, we do not yet know how fast zooxanthellae can adapt, highlighting an important area of future research", says Bette Willis, Professor from the CoECRS at James Cook University.

Research at AIMS is therefore currently assessing whether zooxanthellae can continue to adapt to increasing temperatures and at what rate. This work in progress will provide insights into the capacity of zooxanthellae to adapt to future climate change.

'30 Rock' episode mocks its own star's gay dilemma

(AP) ? NBC comedy "30 Rock" often finds laughs in real-life events in the show business world it inhabits.

But Thursday's edition targeted one of its own cast members, Tracy Morgan, who found himself in real-life hot water last June after making anti-gay remarks during a stand-up appearance in Nashville, Tenn.

On the "30 Rock" episode, Tracy Jordan, the character Morgan plays, sparked a protest after making a couple of ridiculous gay-oriented jokes at a club date.

A contrite Jordan mistakenly apologizes to the makers of Glad bags, rather than to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, known as GLAAD.

Jordan's boss, played by series star Tina Fey, is forced to apologize for him.

"He's not capable of hate," she assures the media. "He's just an idiot who doesn't know what he's saying."

In real life, Tracy Morgan publicly apologized to his fans and the gay and lesbian community for what he called "my choice of words." He denied being a hateful person and acknowledged that "even in a comedy club" what he said went too far "and was not funny in any context." During his rant, Morgan had said in part that if his son were gay, he would "pull out a knife and stab" him.

Fey, who is also the creator and an executive producer of "30 Rock," issued a statement at the time declaring "I hope for his sake that Tracy's apology will be accepted as sincere by his gay and lesbian co-workers at '30 Rock.'"

Mirroring that real-life statement on Thursday's episode, Fey's character, Liz Lemon, chides Jordan by saying, "Do you know how many of your hardworking and dedicated co-workers are gay?"

Arsonists torched black church after Obama's win

The last of three Massachusetts men charged in the burning of a predominantly black church to protest President Barack Obama's election was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in federal prison on Wednesday.

Federal prosecutors said Thomas Gleason was also ordered to pay $1.7 million in restitution. The 24-year-old pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy against civil rights and other charges for what prosecutors called a racially motivated arson.

"This is something that never should have happened anywhere, and certainly not in Springfield, Massachusetts," said Judge Michael A. Ponsor moments after imposing the sentence in U.S. District Court, according to MassLive.com.

Prosecutors said Gleason and two friends burned down the Macedonia Church of God in Christ in Springfield on Nov. 5, 2008, hours after Obama was elected as the nation's first black president.

The church was under construction at the time and no one was inside. However, some firefighters were injured battling the blaze.

Michael Jacques was sentenced to nearly 14 years in prison. Benjamin Haskell received a nine-year sentence. All three men are white.

'One night of stupidity'
Ponsor said Gleason received a shorter sentence than his co-conspirators because he had confessed to the crime, cooperated with prosecutors and showed a real potential for rehabilitation, MassLive.com reported.

"He is a highly salvageable young man who has grown up during this experience. It's unfortunate that that's what it took," it quoted him as saying.

In court, Gleason apologized for what he called an "incredibly stupid" act and for the "pain and frustration" it caused the church's community and to his own family.

"Don't let one night of stupidity define who I am," Gleason said.

Reuters reported that the $1.7 million in restitution includes about $124,000 to the church. The remainder of the money goes to insurance companies involved in the case.

The rebuilt church reopened in September.

The Associated Press, Reuters and msnbc.com staff contributed to this report.

Homes burn as high winds fuel blaze near Reno

High winds cause a brush fire to spread quickly south of Reno, Nevada, destroying at least 10 homes. Msnbc.com's Al Stirrett reports.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated 10:25 p.m. ET: More than 10,000 people have been evacuated as a wind-driven wildfire burns out of control near Reno, The Associated Press reports. Reno Fire Chief Michael Hernandez said hundreds of firefighters were "in the thick of battle" against a blaze that has burned across thousands of acres.

Gov. Brian Sandoval has declared a state of emergency.

See more coverage at NBC station KRNV

At a press conference Thursday afternoon, fire officials said that?the brush fire began around noon just north of Washoe Lake and that the cause was under investigation. They said they were unsure how many homes had been burned. Earlier, NBC station KRNV reported that at least 10 homes had been lost.

Original post: RENO, Nev. -- Fierce winds fueled a fast-moving brush fire through a valley south of Reno on Thursday, destroying at least 10 homes and threatening many more along a stretch of U.S.?395.?

At least 10 homes burned in the Washoe Area Estates?neighborhood, NBC station KRNV of Reno reported. Washoe County declared a state of emergency.

Heavy smoke forced authorities to shutdown?a five-mile stretch of the highway north of Washoe Lake in Pleasant Valley, about 10 miles from Reno, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported.

Authorities evacuated hundreds of children from Pleasant Valley Elementary School and residents of neighboring Washoe City.

Sheriff's deputies told the?Reno newspaper?winds?were pushing flames closer to Reno, where voluntary evacuations were issued in several neighborhoods.

Vice President Joe Biden's visit to Reno -- already delayed because of bad weather?-- was cut short because of the fire.?Biden was two hours late to give a speech to students?at Galena High School. The vice president was forced to end his speech?after 25 minutes because officials needed the high school gym as a command center for firefighters.

Winds in the area were gusting over?50 mph, The Weather Channel reported, but were expected to moderate on Friday to about 20 mph, with gusts to about 30 mph.

Winds gusts?up to 82 mph were reported within a few miles of the fire, and a gust of 122 mph was recorded atop Slide Mountain, which is between the fire and Reno at the Mount Rose ski resort.

Rounding up horses
Flames up to 40 feet high raced through sagebrush, grass and pines in an area where small neighborhoods are dispersed in a rural landscape. Washoe County animal services officials were helping round up horses and other livestock for evacuation.

NBC News

A large home is destroyed by flames near Reno on Thursday.

About six flights?were diverted, delayed or canceled at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport as a reult of heavy black smokein Washoe Valley, said spokesman Brian Kulpin.

The conditions were similar to those Nov. 18, when a wind-driven fire destroyed 30 homes in southwest Reno.

Sarah Palin to South Carolinians: Vote For Newt!

Sarah Palin hasn't endorsed Newt Gingrich in the GOP presidential race, but says she would vote for the former House Speaker if she were a South Carolinian.

Way to really put yourself out there.

"If I had to vote in South Carolina, in order to keep this thing going I'd vote for Newt and I would want this to continue," the 2008 V.P. nominee told Fox News.

"These guys are getting better in their debates, they are getting more concise, more grounded in what their beliefs are and articulating what their ideas are."

"If I had to vote in South Carolina, in order to keep this thing going I'd vote for Newt and I would want this to continue. More debates, more vetting of candidates."

"I want to see that taking place this time because America is on this precipice, it's that important. We need this process to continue on," she added.

Todd Palin, Sarah's husband, recently endorsed Gingrich, and Sarah's comments show she thinks of him favorably despite a lack of overt endorsement.

Whether it does him any good in Saturday's primary remains to be seen. Newt's showing at the first South Carolina debate was strong, with another coming up tonight.
