Baseball union head assails leaks on drug inquiry

NEW YORK (AP) - The head of the players' union said Thursday baseball's drug agreement could be undermined by leaks to the media about whether players are cooperating with an investigation by the commissioner.

Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun are among the players being interviewed as part of Major League Baseball's inquiry into Biogenesis, a closed Florida anti-aging clinic accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs.

"Repeated leaks threaten to harm the integrity" of the drug agreement, union executive director Michael Weiner said in a statement. He added that the leaks "call into question the required level of confidentiality needed to operate a successful prevention program."

Braun is among several players who refused to answer questions about their dealings with Biogenesis, which was first reported Wednesday by ESPN and the Daily News of New York. Braun was interviewed last month and Rodriguez is scheduled to be interviewed Friday.

"The players want a clean game and they demand a testing program that is not only the toughest in professional sports, but one that guarantees each player due process rights accompanied by strict confidentiality provisions," Weiner said.

The union said it has no information about the source of the leaks or any indication that MLB is the source.

MLB has spent most of the year investigating about 20 players for their links to Biogenesis, including Rodriguez and Braun, both former MVPs. Miami New Times reported in January the clinic had distributed banned drugs to major leaguers.

Braun and Rodriguez have said they didn't do anything that merits discipline.

MLB aims to complete the player interviews in mid-July, but is not sure whether it will meet that schedule. Management then will have to decide on possible discipline, which is likely to be challenged in grievances before an arbitrator.

"It would be unfortunate if anyone prejudged the results of the investigation based on unsubstantiated leaks that are a clear violation of the JDA," Weiner said, referring to baseball's joint drug agreement.

Rodriguez has said he used performance-enhancing drugs while with Texas from 2001-03 but has denied using them since.

Braun's 50-game suspension was overturned last year by an arbitrator who ruled the Milwaukee star's urine sample was mishandled by the drug collector.

Movie Review: ?Despicable Me 2?

I have no right to write this review. Illumination Entertainment did not create this movie for me nor did they create it for most of theHword readers, but they did create it for the kids in your family. They will love it! If the kids who were in the same theatre I was are any indication of the entertainment value of this film then I would solidly say that to them this was the premiere event of the season, perhaps the century. Minions were clutched in their tiny hands and their mothers proudly wore t-shirts adorned with a one eyed yellow character that gives tiny Mike Wazowski a run for his money attempting to claim the best one-eyed character of the summer.

The film may not have been made for my demographic or yours, but that doesn?t mean it isn?t a ton of fun for all ages. First off, the film looks absolutely flawless on a large digital screen. The sound and visuals are impeccable and were astounding from the first moment on screen all the way to the end. The colors pop, the characters look sharper than ever, and the action happens from every point of view which makes the film fascinating to behold. I personally didn?t see the film in 3D and I rarely say this, but I regret not getting an additional dimension with my ticket. This sequel was made for three dimensions.

Gru (Steve Carell) is at it again, but this time rather than working towards villainous goals this pointy nosed funny man is working for the good guys, the Anti-Villain League to be exact. Gru?s new position comes with a few perks including new gadgets, vehicles, and a love interest played by the infectiously hilarious Kristen Wiig. The two work together closely trying to discover who is behind a global domination plot.

Don?t you worry though ?Despicable? purists because along for the fun are the equally hilarious yellow minions that have gained international fame as brilliant comedians and Gru?s three lovely daughters, Margo, Edith, and the adorable Agnes.

In addition to these new and returning characters is the macho man, luchadore, restaurant owner, Eduardo and his vile little chicken friend. This character was originally supposed to be played by Javier Bardem, but Bardem dropped out of the project. Then Al Pacino took on the role of Eduardo, but unfortunately dropped out of the project months before the premiere. I was afraid that the character acting was going to be shoddy and unfinished, but the opposite was true. Benjamin Bratt took on the role finally and completely knocked it out of the park. Eduardo was for the most part humorous and the voice acting fit the character perfectly. It?s hard to imagine what an Al Pacino voiced character would have sounded like, but I think considering the circumstances everything turned out for the best.

?Despicable Me 2? is as fun, funny, and full of entertainment as the original film with added bonus coming from more humorous moments starring the minions. Those little guys really are the standout performers in this profitable little franchise from a fresh animation company. By the end of the film you too may be ready to pick up your own plush, yellow friend because ?Despicable Me 2? delivers on everything that it promised with it?s engaging little yellow previews.

Teresa Heinz Kerry?suffered a grand mal seizure of unknown origin, "an electrical storm in the brain" that sent her to the hospital in critical condition Sunday,?a medical source who treated her told NBC News.

The wife of Secretary of State John Kerry and heir to the ketchup company fortune was upgraded to fair condition Monday, the secretary's spokesman said, and she continues to undergo evaluation.

Heinz Kerry, 74, was flown to Boston for further medical treatment after being taken by ambulance from the couple's Nantucket, Mass., home to a hospital on Sunday afternoon, sources close to the family told NBC News.

She had to be intubated, the source said, which would be unusual, according to doctors who specialize in epilepsy and other seizure disorders.?

The wife of secretary of state John Kerry was rushed to a hospital on Nantucket in critical condition and was transferred to a hospital in Boston. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

A grand mal seizure, also known as a generalized tonic clonic seizure, is the most serious type, one that involves the entire body and typically causes the victim to lose consciousness.

?It?s an electrical storm in the brain,? said Dr. Nathan Fountain, director of the F.E. Dreifuss Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.?The effort of a seizure can be compared to running a 100-yard dash, and it leaves the patient exhausted and disoriented, he added.?

The cause of such seizures is often unclear, especially if it?s an isolated episode. A seizure could be prompted by a stroke, by reactions to medication, by an underlying medical condition, even by something like serious sleep deprivation, said Fountain, who emphasized that he had no direct knowledge of Heinz Kerry?s condition or care.?

?Most often, we don?t figure it out,? he said. ?Almost anything that affects the brain can cause this.?

Typical seizures last about 3 minutes and may be treated with anti-seizure medications, which can suppress breathing, perhaps leading to the need for intubation, said Dr. Jacqueline French, president of the American Epilepsy Society and a professor of neurology at New York University Langone Medical Center. She noted, however, that there is evidence of an increase in new cases of epilepsy in people older than 65, when their brains may become more susceptible to the disorder.?

?Unfortunately, the seizures are not recognized until the big grand mal seizure happens,? she said.?

Heinz Kerry was admitted to the emergency room at Nantucket Cottage Hospital in critical but stable condition about 3:30 p.m., according to a hospital spokesperson. No further details were released.

Heinz Kerry, a breast cancer survivor, is the mother of three adult sons from her marriage to the late Pennsylvania Sen. John Heinz who died in a plane crash in 1991.

She was treated at Massachusetts General in Boston in 2009 following her surgery to treat breast cancer. She also received treatment at a Washington-area hospital that same year.

Heinz Kerry?s seizure could be related to her previous treatment for breast cancer, said Dr. Orrin Devinsky, director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at New York University Langone Medical Center. The cancer can spread to the lining of the brain or to the brain itself, causing a grand mal seizure.

?I wouldn?t say it is likely; I would say it is a possibility,? Devinsky said.?

Sec. Kerry has been in Nantucket since returning from the Middle East on Wednesday.

Heinz Kerry is a longtime activist on environmental causes and leads the Heinz Family Foundation.

?The family is grateful for the outpouring of support it has received and aware of the interest in her condition, but they ask for privacy at this time,? Johnson said in the statement.
